Kumiho is a vaping device manufacturer based in Shenzhen and distributed through the online store HealthCabin, which invited me the pod in question for free. Kumiho currently deals exclusively with pod mods, searching for the name on Google, the “Open System Vape Brand” stands out proudly, so no U&G, a choice that immediately inspired sympathy in me. Their catalog is composed of 5 pod mods for now. It arrives in the black cardboard box seen above, while this is the back.
With over the specifications and the “Healthcabin Distribution”, the scratch & scan to verify the originality of the product, also present on the pod and coil boxes. To integrate the specifications, the S is the second largest pod of the Thoth family, composed for now by 3 other models. Made of aluminum, Kumiho defines the design as “radio” given the shape and the prints that recall that aesthetic. On the hardware side it boasts a 1000 mah battery, which allows a wattage ranging from 5 to 35 watts and to illuminate a 0.42-inch OLED screen. For vaping instead, it has a nice set of coils (3 mtl), an airflow to increase or reduce the airiness and choice between automatic shooting or via fire button.
The contents of the cardboard box are a bit sparse with the Thoth S, a pod with an integrated 0.6 ohm coil and an instruction manual.
The first impact is with the 2 ml pod, in this case with the integrated coil but as you will see, with the possibility of using replaceable ones. The material is for all PCTG, tasteless and comfortable to vape. The finish is slightly glossy and not opaque, so there are no problems in checking the liquid level. You should notice the “MIN” engraved on the pod to understand when it is the case to refill and below in white, the impedance of the coil.
Refilling is done by removing that piece of rubber with a generously sized hole that allows refilling even with the tip of a chubby. The rubber is not fixed, so even the part that remains attached to the pod can be detached if you want to do a thorough cleaning of the pod with replaceable coil. Contact with the body of the Thoth S occurs via those magnets, which provide a good seal and are “read” thanks to the gold-plated pins. You can also see the hole/sensor that allows automatic shooting, which is always active.
One of the major strengths of the entire Thoth line is the compatibility of pods and coils between all 4 models with a really wide choice between empty pods (empty cartridge) and those with integrated coils (refillable pods). These are the recommended ohm values āāand wattages, valid for both coils and pods with integrated coils:
- 0.4ohm (25W-35W)
- 0.6ohm(20W-25W)
- 0.8ohm(16W-20W)
- 1.0ohm(12W-15W)
- 1.2ohm(10W-12W)
Kumiho also speaks of “anti-leaking” thanks to that sort of second coating under the coil bottom and the generous o-ring in the initial part.
I can say that I saw very little condensation, except at the beginning when I started to tinker with it and I often varied pods and wattages to understand how and what worked best. Finally, the possibility of choosing whether to buy the 5 packs with 5 identical coils of the same impedance or the packs with an assortment of different impedances to better test the various possibilities offered by Kumiho that I will show later.
We come to the “body” of the Thoth S: dimensions of 48 x 18.6 x 69.5mm, weight (with pod inserted) of 99 grams given by the total realization of the aluminum body. The housing for the pod has gold-plated pins, two magnets also large and the air hole and the one that allows automatic shooting. On the side, the loop for the lanyard.
On the side, the USB type-C port for charging. There is no USB cable included although you can buy one branded Kumiho. Personally I used the first one at hand and it took 50-60 minutes to charge, so standard for a 1000 mAh battery.
On the other side, the air slot with 3 holes that can be partially closed at will, with a tooth hard enough not to move accidentally. It goes from a closed mtl with the first hole to a “normal” mtl with all 3 open, it is not a mtl pod on the edge of flavor.
The back of the pod has little or nothing, if not a fake button with the words “mode 1, 2, 3” which has the function of anti-slip in case you place it on a surface and if you are right-handed, it is natural to rest your thumb there while holding the mod and vaping with automatic puff.
The front side, with the BUTTON (singular, the only real button is the real one is on the right, the one on the left is for resting your thumb) is covered in soft rubber with 3 notches. The insert with the fox is instead made of plastic and works as an anti-stress if turned; there is no way to “block” it but I imagine with a bit of super attack it can be solved. The screen is a 0.42-inch OLED, black and white with non-adjustable brightness. However, it has two levels of illumination: the first, the brightest, lasts about 15 seconds after the last click, after which it switches to a dimmer illumination for another 15 seconds and then goes into standby. Those written next to Power, Watt etc. are not a sticker but are actually printed.
The circuit, given its size, still has the essentials and perhaps something more. On the main screen there is the battery level and on the right, the padlock to understand if the pod is in locked state or not. Nice large wattage numbers (delivery from 5 to 35 watts), below the value in ohm and the 5-digit puff counter.
The functions can be performed using the only button present:
-5 clicks to turn on the Thoth S
-3 clicks to unlock the wattage, each click increases by one watt or hold down to make them scroll quickly
-5 clicks with the pod turned on to enter the micro menu with the choice:
- Puff Clear
- Lock (the automatic shot WORKS anyway)
- Power Off
To select one of the 3 items, press the fire button for 3 seconds. Confirm wattage and back if you entered the menu by mistake just wait 3 seconds without touching anything.
Small warning: WITH the pod inserted and coil, if you go to select the watts the Thoth S decides the wattage, and sets a ceiling based on the coil read. For the 0.6 ohm, it allows you to vary between 20 and 25 watts. To “exit” this sort of imposition you have to remove the pod, select the watts involved, confirm the watts by waiting, insert the pod again. I remember that there is no need to switch between automatic shooting or fire, they are both always active (unless lock).
Finally, the protections reported in the instruction manual:
-Delivery cutoff after 10 seconds (TIME OUT written on the screen)
-Short circuit if a resistance lower than 0.4 ohm or higher than 3 ohm is detected (ATOMIZER SHORT)
-Check Atomizer if the coil is not detected (CHECK ATOMIZER)
-Overheating protection if the circuit temperature is too high (TOO HOT)
How does the Thoth S behave when vaping: I received the complete series of pods contained in the TESTING PACK with INTEGRATED coil (Refillable Pods) and I tested them a bit. I remember that the strength of the Thoth series is having universal coils and pods that mount all models: some are therefore more suitable than others based on battery capacity and airiness. They all also have in common the rule of staying 2, 3 or if not more watts below the wattage recommended by Kumiho. An example above all, since it comes in the package with the Thot S: the 0.6 at 16 watts is already reactive both when using it with the automatic shot and with the button, excellent power supply even with long shots. At the minimum recommended wattage, however, it limps a bit on long shots (over 7-8 seconds) as regards power supply.
On this Thoth S the most appreciable are obviously the two pure MTL ones, so 1.2 (used at 9 watts) and 1 ohm (used at 11 watts) for a good balance of duration based on the 1000 mah battery and airflow of the Thoth S. From the “lenient” single tobaccos that I have to some fruity ones or even mixing them. The 0.8 ohm (used at 13 watts) is the most flexible with a “correct” MTL, which does not yet veer to the open but which allows you to open the airflow and vape some creamy tobaccos.
The one included in the package, namely the 0.6 ohm, I believe is already designed for other more airy models that will come out or for the Thot T (semi-mechanical older sister of this S) as well as the 0.4 ohm.
Final things: although it is not marketed like this, the best qualities that I found in the Thoth S is not having to worry about where you put it because in case of a fall, it is the floor that gets hurt. So heavy duty pod mod but of small dimensions since before the early autumn that hit Italy in these days, it entered in the pocket of the shorts. The pods in addition to being leakproof are highly customizable both in terms of offer and capacity and color with always the possibility of using them on other devices of the Thoth series. To buy the Thoth S in one of the available colors (my color is Artic Silver) on the website of the distributor HealthCabin Kumiho THOTH S Pod System Kit 1000mAh 2ml, while these are the pods that I tried Kumiho THOTH Series Side Filling Pod Cartridge with 5 Different Ohms but there are many others available by searching for “Kumiho Thoth”.
I thank HealthCabin for giving me the opportunity to try an emerging brand, svapo.it and Staff for the permission to post the text and you for reading.
