Introduction

Without a doubt both the Geekvape Aegis mods and the Zeus tank lines are equally popular. While the Aegis Max lightens the load from the original Aegis mod. But still retains much of its original aesthetics and durability. The Geekvape Zeus sub-ohm tank brings stock coils to the Zeus lineup. But while this all sounds promising, what if any problems arose? Lets take a closer look with this review of the Geekvape Aegis Max and the Zeus Sub-Ohm stock coil tank.

Packaging

GEEKVAPE AEGIS MAX

Typical of Geekvape’s packaging the front features a laminated photograph of the enclosed colour option for the Geekvape Aegis Max and the Zeus Sub-Ohm tank. Additionally the back features the box contents, key features, health warnings and authenticity checker.

Furthermore removing the box lid, reveals the Geekvape Aegis Max mod sat within its foam inlay. Additionally beneath the inlay sits the Zeus Sub-Ohm tank with the Z2 0.2Ω coil pre-fitted. While the spare Z1 0.4Ω coil, glass, and USB cable are inside the box sat alongside the Zeus Sub-Ohm tank.

Build quality

Without a doubt the classic look fo the Aegis from Geekvape still looks good. Moreover with its mat rubber coating, and silver coloured finishing the Geekvape Aegis Max looks and feels great. Furthermore the faux leather styling offers plenty of grip. While the thin padding underneath helps to make the Aegis Max comfortable to hold. Despite shedding some weight, the mod weighs in at 141g or 202g with 21700 battery. Importantly the Aegis Max retains the feeling of a very robust and sturdy mod.

Featuring a large plastic fascia the layout is clean and tidy. While the audible buttons are both responsive and well placed for ease of use for even those with larger fingers and thumbs. Furthermore the LCD layout is crisp and clean with all the readouts a good size.

While there will be those who are disappointed with the lack of a fast charging USB-C connection. However 21700 / 18650 batteries are always best charged in a dedicated charger from a reputable manufacture.

It is not surprising how waterproof the Geekvape Aegis Max is with its very sturdy screw in door. Moreover this style of battery door makes easy work for replacing the battery. However if you have over tightened the door, there is a handy tool in the spares box to help you turn the handle.

510 Connection

GEEKVAPE AEGIS MAX

Without a doubt the Geekvape Aegis Max happily seats the 26mm Zeus Sub-Ohm nicely. But it will also house a 30mm tank with no spill over. Importantly the 510 centre pin offers a good level of stiffness. Which gives some confidence in its long term use. Whilst the well cut threading is silky smooth the centre pin appears to have a throw of approximately 3mm, which is good to see.

Zeus Sub-Ohm

Firstly I love the matt black finish on the Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm and naturally this finish will go with nearly any mod. But works extremely well with the rubber coating on the Aegis Max.

Importantly the Zeus Sub-Ohm tank is cleanly milled with good knurling on both the base and the top cap. Furthermore the base and chimney screw on with ease and the glass is held firmly in place by the silicone seals with no leaking.

Dimensions

Geekvape Aegis Max

Dimensionally from the base to the top the Geekvape Aegis Max stands 92.8mm tall. Furthermore the Aegis Max has a width of 33.5mm and a depth of 46.3mm from the front to the back.

Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm

Importantly the base diameter of the tank doesn’t alter for the TPD version of the Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm tank. Moreover the Zeus Sub-Ohm has a diameter of 26mm and including the drip tip has a height of 51.2mm.

Functionality

While offering a no fuss style of vaping in the wattage mode, the Geekvape Aegis Max also features Temperature Control, Variable Power Curve, Bypass Mode and Puff Counter.

Moreover turning on the Aegis Max is via the customary 5 clicks on the fire button. Furthermore 3 click select the vape mode. While holding the fire and the up or down buttons adjusts the screen brightness.

VW – Variable Wattage

Without a doubt having an unrestricted adjustable wattage mode allows for fine tuning of the vape experience. Moreover with the Geekvape Aegis Max the up and down control buttons allow for adjustments in 0.1W increments. Perfect for balancing the power output to suit both coil and personal preference.

TC Ni / TC Ti / SS

Once the coil metal is selected adjusting the coils temperature is via the up and down buttons. However the coils ohm (Ω) rating, wattage and TCR value can be adjusted by clicking the fire button three times. Followed by pressing the fire button to cycle to the desired option, then use the up and down buttons to adjust.

VPC

While in the TCR mode, clicking the fire button three times followed by the down button, allows adjustments of the individual wattages of the curve bar. Furthermore the fire button scrolls through each curve position and the up and down button changes the wattage.

Bypass

A form of protected mech mod mode. Moreover the coil receives the power output from the remaining battery voltage.

Battery Use

Featuring either a single 21700 or 18650 battery (With included adapter) the battery performance on the Geekvape Aegis Max is surprisingly good for a single battery device. Typically with single battery devices you tend to feel you are forever changing the battery. However this does feel significantly less on the Aegis Max. Furthermore on the screen, the battery levels are shown in icon form, similar to that of a mobile phone. But there is no percentage readout or remaining charge time either during use, or whilst charging.

However some will be disappointed with the USB Mini connection, and the Aegis Max charging rate of 5v 1.5A. Nonetheless I will always highly recommend not to use a mod for charging. Importantly a dedicated battery charger from a trusted manufacturer will always be the safer option.

Refilling

Due to the twist off and remove top cap design. Refilling the Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm is not the tidiest of methods. Nonetheless it is very quick and easy to remove with the bayonet style fitting. Furthermore refilling with even the largest of bottles is quick and easy work.

Airflow

Featuring a fully adjustable top fed airflow, the noise produced while vaping isn’t the noisiest on the market. Perhaps a tad quieter. Nonetheless I preferred the airflow closed down by a quarter, which seemed perfect for flavour and vapour production. Furthermore regardless of the smooth moving airflow control rings position, the vape remains smooth with no turbulence.

Coil Replacement

Clearly the plug and play style of coils used in the Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm tank makes life a little easier. However the Zeus uses strong gripping o-rings. While this is great at preventing leaks. It can make removing the coil a little stiff. Consequentially Geekvape supply a little coil removal tool, which makes light work of removing the used coil.

Nonetheless with the old coil removed, prime the new coil by placing a little e-liquid down into the coil, and a drop onto each wicking hole. Now pop the new coil into the pod and refill if need be. Additionally leave the coil to sit for a while to ensure it becomes suitably saturated. Typically I like to leave it 10 – 15 minutes, then vape.

As a rule and part of the testing process, I leave the used coil filled with e-liquid to sit in the Geekvape Zeus Sub-Ohm tank for a minimum of 24 hours. As a result neither the tank or coils leaked. Which isn’t surprising as the Zeus Sub-Ohm is a top fed airflow. Consequentially the tank would need to be almost horizontal before it would leak, even if it was completely flooded.

Z2 Meshed 0.2Ω Coil

The Geekvape Z2 0.2Ω coil breaks in very quickly with good flavour from the start. Furthermore the coil adds another depth to the flavour profiles produced, especially with high end fruits. Additionally 65W seems a perfect balance for most e-liquids. Sadly my custard flavour e-liquids are still steeping and couldn’t really test the Z2 with custards. However I did run a small amount through and it does look promising.

Z1 Meshed 0.4Ω Coil

Without a doubt the Z1 0.4Ω coil wicks very well and suitable for chain vaping. Furthermore the 0.4Ω remains me of the flavour profile of the original Aspire Cleito 0.4Ω coil, which I loved. Moreover at 60W the Z1 meshed coil is perfect for high end fruits, with Mango represented extremely well.

Chipset and Protection

While the Geekvape Aegis Max features the AS-100 chipset, that drives the vape experience. Additionally the AS-100 offers the following level of protection.

  • Battery Low (Low Voltage Protection) – Prevents the battery levels dropping to a point of no return.
  • Short circuit protection – Safety cut out
  • Over charging/discharging Protection
  • Over-heat protection – High temperature protection, protecting both PCB and battery.
  • 10s Timeout – Protects against continued accidental firing.

Niggles

Rarely does a vape kit come along with no niggles. But the Geekvape Aegis Max kit with the Zeus Sub-Ohm kit stands out from the crowd. Moreover this kit has not had any issues or let me downs. But if I was to be picky it would be the slightly plasticky feel of the control buttons when compared to the original.

Summary

Without a doubt the Geekvape Aegis Max and the Zeus Sub-Ohm kit makes for a killer combo. Moreover the flavour is great with smooth airflow and when coupled with the ruggedness of the Aegis Max, this is simply a kit that can be taken and enjoyed anywhere. Furthermore as a top fed airflow the chances of e-liquid escaping the Zeus Sub-Ohm tank is close to nil.
